Squires Winery located on the idyllic banks of the Ovens River adjacent – has just launched its first ever releases of wine into the market.

Launching online this month – September 2020 -Squires Winery Cellar Dooris scheduled to open to visitors and locals alike in December 2020 subject to all things Covid. You will be able to come and enjoy the beautiful rustic countryside while tasting a drop - or two - of Squires’ new releases and is located on a stunning riverside property in Bundalong, Victoria.

In 2020 they had planned to open a new cellar door on the beautiful Ovens River accessible by boat and car. Paul says “Covid has meant that those plans are still in place, but we now hope to open in December 2020 to the public and are looking forward to welcoming people to a new North East Victoria tourism destination, however like many business we have had to pivot, we have launched our web site and our new release wines are ready to purchase online.”

The new winery - run by Paul and Bern Squires – is a family run operation- bringing with it a special focus on sustainability from power generated by an Australian first solar tracking system  to the use of waste practices combined with years of experience on their vineyard and olive grove.

Paul has a long history in regional tourism and the wine industry, and the family purchased the property back in 2002. For most of the past 20 years the grapes have been sold locally to wineries and turned in award winning wines. Bern has a passion for sustainability and is driving the business over the next five years to smart farm accreditation and zero waste. She is also establishing the vegetable gardens that over time will supply the majority of produce for cellar door dining.

Paul was born in nearby Yarrawonga and has an affinity with regional Victoria spending time in Wangaratta, Bendigo and Ballarat. Paul went on to work in leadership positions around the world in Senior Local Government management and even for the Mayor of London on the redevelopment of Trafalgar Square - before returning with Bern and their two boys to the lure of the Australian countryside in North East Victoria surrounded by the beauty and fine wine of the region.

A director and partner with one of Rutherglen’s oldest wineries - Buller Wines - known for its flavoursome fortified wines, Paul together with an outstanding team reinvigorated the winery taking the business from strength to strength.

Since then, Paul has been involved as the Treasurer and Deputy Chair for the Winemakers of Rutherglen group for the past five years - a collection of 19 local wineries surrounding the Rutherglen region, helping produce some of the country’s leading Muscat and Durif’s.

Launching a host of exciting new wine releases alongside partner Bern Squires, The new releases feature their estate grown bold dark reds of Cabernet Sauvignon and Durif, full bodied Shiraz and refreshing drops of Pinot Grigio, Prosecco and Rose.

Bern has been intrinsically involved in all elements of the design and development of the wines. Bern says “We wanted to express in our first release the incredible riverside and state forest we are surrounded by. We were seeking to keep as much local as we could and collaborated with renowned local Chiltern artist Lisa Bishop on our labels. The labels are vibrant depictions of some of the amazing birdlife we have here. From beautiful black swans to fat kookaburras and local galahs the labels alone are collectors’ editions. We plan to continue using local artists to depict the regions beauty and the next range is already being developed.”

When the cellar door opens there will be range of visitor experiences, those who visit Squires Winery will have a range of winery activities to keep the whole family entertained. Visit the Cellar Door experience and enjoy free tastings, personalise your wines and book in for a blending session to create your very own flavours, or even take a stunning pontoon boat ride along the Murray River looking out for wildlife with the Ovens River Ride.
